TLDR

The Challenge
Find the most efficient and cost-effective way to help teens study for and pass their drivers license written exam through their states DMV.
The Solution
An elegant multiple choice quiz that assists the teenager through 50 rotating questions that are almost identical to those found on the state exam, but not stopping there. Through our user research, we discovered that the biggest problem teens are facing while using a practice test solution is they don’t know why their answer was wrong. To solve for this users are presented with an explanation as to why their answer was correct/incorrect as soon as they answer the question as well as at the end of the quiz on the review page.

User Research

Designing for Generation Z
There are a couple of simple rules to keep in mind when designing for this generation. Firstly, it needs to be fast. With so many other offerings they can choose to spend their attention on, there is absolutely no chance they will stick around for an experience that doesn’t load quickly. Secondly, They’re digital natives. Since they have been immersed in it since birth they see tech as a necessary tool and not just a modern convenience. Because of this Gen Z is way ahead of past generations in terms of exposure to visuals and advertisements.
Purpose
To compare usability, satisfaction, and sentiments across three versions of a free online practice test (DMV.ORG vs. Driving-test.org vs. CA DMV.gov). Identify any potential opportunities and room for improvement for DMV.ORG practice tests moving forward.
Participants
We interviewed a total of five participants that were planning on taking their driver's license written exam within the next month or had taken it within the past month from Generation Z.
Scenario
You're a California resident preparing to take the written test for your driver's license. You want to find a free online practice test that will help you prepare for the CA DMV test. You'll be asked to visit 3 different versions of the test, you do not need to complete each one. Answer enough questions to get a feel for the format and to decide what you like and dislike about each one.
